American Football Shoulder Pads
How to choose american football shoulder pads
Sub-type label
Read the sub-type tag. American Football Protective Gear means purpose-made, Sporting Goods may be vague.
Sizing tier
Settle on youth or adult sizing first. Youth small fits kids, but they grow beyond it.
Standard vs custom
Weigh standard legacy pads against custom armour from sellers like Etsy - Zappitprops. Custom fits, standard is ready.
Brand type
Note the brand mix. Dedicated makers such as Douglas focus on pad ranges, craft sellers do one-off builds.
Sport match
Match the pad to the sport. Athletics listings might suit training, not full scrimmage.
What's good
- American football specific pads shield against contact better than broad sporting goods foam.
- Youth sizes give smaller players a snug fit that adult pads cannot.
- Legacy-cut standard pads give a proven shape for training week in, week out.
- Custom armour lets you order a colour and fit missing from mass lines.
Things to watch
- Youth pads are outgrown fast, so you buy again within a season or two.
- Custom marketplace armour can have uneven sizing next to branded stock ranges.
- Sporting goods and athletics tags may hide generic pads not built for tackles.
- Standard pads trade the bespoke comfort of custom work for off-the-shelf speed.
Care & maintenance
Dry after use
Air the pads after every session to keep sweat from rotting the lining.
Surface clean
Wipe the hard shell with a damp cloth, then leave to dry naturally.
Fixture check
Check straps and rivets each month for slack or cracks.
Flat storage
Store them flat, not under kit bags, to protect the shoulder curve.
