What to Look For in New Puppy Supplies
Before clicking "buy," consider these essential factors to ensure you are getting the best value and safety for your investment:
- Durability and Material: Puppy teeth are sharp. Look for "chew-proof" materials and non-toxic, BPA-free plastics.
- Size Adjustability: Puppies grow fast. Choose crates with divider panels and adjustable collars to save money as they mature.
- Ease of Cleaning: From accidents to muddy paws, you want waterproof fabrics and machine-washable covers.
- Safety Certifications: Ensure toys don't have small parts that could be choking hazards and check for crash-tested travel gear.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the first things a new puppy owner should buy?
The absolute essentials in our best dog supplies for new puppy owners 2026: essential guide include a crate, a high-quality leash/harness, puppy-specific food, teething toys, and an enzymatic cleaner for accidents.
Is it worth buying an expensive dog crate for a puppy?
Yes, high-quality crates like the Diggs Revol are worth the investment because they are designed to prevent injuries that cheaper wire crates can cause. They also tend to have better resale value once your puppy is fully trained.
How do I choose the right size harness for a growing puppy?
Look for harnesses with multiple adjustment points. Measure your puppy's neck and chest girth, and choose a size where your pup is at the smaller end of the range, allowing room for growth.
What is the best toy for a teething puppy in 2026?
The KONG Puppy remains the best because of its specialized rubber. However, textured nylon toys from brands like Nylabone are also excellent for soothing sore gums and encouraging healthy chewing habits.
Are smart dog cameras like Furbo necessary?
While not "essential," they are highly recommended for new puppy owners who need to monitor separation anxiety or ensure the puppy isn't getting into trouble while left alone for short periods.
